DS Maolalai is a poet from Ireland who has been writing and publishing poetry for almost 10 years. His first collection, Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden, was published in 2016 by the Encircle Press. He has a second collection forthcoming from Turas Press in 2019.

we took the boat out:
aidan
rowing
in our center
and jack
at the back
on tiller.
I was sitting
on the sharp end,
sipping a bottled beer,
cracking jokes and choosing the music.
I’m not lazy
but there was one set of oars
and it’s jack’s boat,
so I wasn’t going to usurp command.
3 guys on holiday –
in a boat,
and not even fishing.
just afloat,
after spending the day before fossil-hunting
for aidan’s college job.
the sky was good though.
there was an island
which we’d picked for our arbitrary destination.
it worries me
sometimes;
how everything can be fine
for so long
until you don’t know
that something awful
is about to happen.
